Bright Is The Day Dark Was The Night
Dark Was The Night is hands down one of my most anticipated albums to be released in the next year, hip-hop or otherwise. On February 17th, 31 exclusive tracks featuring Bon Iver, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Yo La Tengo, David Byrne, Cat Power, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, The National, Jose Gonzalez, and Feist will be released for download and vinyl purchase. Benefits from sales will go toward HIV and AIDS awareness.
Whoever the genius is who gathered all of these talents in one room to make this needs a standing ovation. Pairing Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) with Aaron Dessner (The National)? You, sir, are my hero. I dare hip-hop heads or labels to make something of this measure...it hasn't really been done since the Lyricist Lounge or Soundbombing series', though perhaps N.A.S.A. just made the attempt. And no, halfass mixtapes you churn out in one studio session don't count.
As my boy Jake put it, this album is going to be some kind of musical renaissance.

La Maison de Mon Reve
After a long wait for nearly a decade, Portishead's most recent album Third was a huge disappointment (few will agree, Im sure). It had little continuity, lacked the passion of all previous albums, and most importantly, had few if any thumping hip-hop-influenced beats that made Portishead iconic in the first place.
That said, all has been forgiven and forgotten since my recent introduction to CocoRosie, a French duo formed by sisters Bianca "Coco" Leilani and Sierra Rose "Rosie" Casady. The below track represents everything I miss about Portishead in 2009, though it truly sounds a bit more like Portishead on whippits.

gRitZA
I like my grits with cheddar and salt, and my RZA with Inspektah Deck and a dash of blues guitar lick.
Also, just out of curiosity, is the RZ blazed out of his mind or did he get punched in both eyes at once? Im going to opt for the former.

The Chocolate Boy Wonder
Though his last album was a complete flop, Pete Rock's new beat Tearz! for Earatik Statik is a refreshing breath of fresh air.
Earatik Statik's new album The God, The Bad, and The Ugly will also feature production from J-Zone and Large Professor, as well as an appearance from Sean {P!} Price.

Rare Nasty Nas
A creeping reggae beat that has that Thief's Theme energy, a 90s collabo revived in 09, another unreleased Nas single dropped like an anvil on your forehead by TFC.
Nas turns this beat into shredded cabbage.

Experiencing The Dream
D-Nice, creator of the True Hip-Hop Stories video series, blesses us with a sharp eye at the inauguration. Living in this moment is a bit of a dream, and D captures it perfectly.
It's quite obvious that he has a bright future as a director beyond these Vimeo shorts.

Try To Low Ball Me, Do Em Like Joe Torre
Joe Budden is the poster boy for "Has Been" to "Will Be." He began his career as a material-obsessed commercial one-hit wonder, faded to black for years after a complete (inevitable) flop, and then arose in 2008 as possibly one of the best MCs of the year.
How? Well, when the kid woke up from the Rap Game Day Dream, he arrived hungry and sick of the garbage. He denounced Def Jam, Jay-Z, and pretty much every major label, gave up on making hits and kissing ass, and chose hard work and artistry as the route to success (this strategy will never fail, hip-hop. It's the Year of the Ox in '09, so hard work pays off).
He recently released the nearly perfect Mood Musik 3, which has caught a full album remix with the equally inventive and depressed Portishead. This one features a good 9 minutes over one of the better beats of our lifetime. Cop the full Portishead/Joe Budden mixtape available here for further proof.
I'm an artist;
I paint pictures,
I don't just rhyme words.

Ryan Leslie Makes A Beat For Kid Cudi
The multi-talented Ryan Leslie shows off a new beat for Kid Cudi, that is definitely going to knock at parties.
If you dont know Leslie yet, he is one of those producers like Just Blaze who steps into the studio, knocks out the drums on a real drum set, then plays the horns, the keys, sings the hook, and does all the mastering himself. Meaning: all you Fruity Loops simpletons need to study this cat REAL hard and put that talent to work.
Check more of Leslie's beat-making sessions here and here.

Biggie x Kweli
DJ Graffiti just hit me with this blazing Biggie remix featuring Kweli, just in time for the drop of Notorious tomorrow. Well timed. Sounds like something these two might have actually collabo'd on had Biggie seen another decade.
This predictably nice mixtape is available for free download on MLK Day, courtesy of Graffiti.

Freshman Producer's of 2009 (So Far)
Here we have the two most impressive instrumental opuses of the new year.
First producer on deck is the highly slept on 14kt. Though he has been around for a long minute as a producer for the Athletic Mic League, his most recent magical album The Golden Hour is going to begin to turn heads immediately in his direction from this point on. Expect Jay Electronica and Big Pooh to have his beats sooner than later (source: Twitter). This entire album is a must have, with original sounds deeply influenced by Dilla himself and Flying Lotus.
14KT - REPRISE
14KT - LESS THAN ENOUGH
Secondly we have Exile, Blu's tour de force. This one off his new album Radio. You already know what it is Le Full Clipe, I will spare the plug.

Weekly Hip-Hop Question, Vol 1
The Full Clip will be running an obscure weekly hip-hop question every weekend. The correct answer will be provided when someone guesses correctly, or whenever you all collectively admit defeat.
This week's question:
What Clint Eastwood film has the original vocal sample from the beginning of Hi-Tek's album Hi-Teknology? The sample in question is: "One thing I dont understand is Hi-Tek. I can't wait to introduce you to him."

4,3,2,1 Blast Off
More new K-OS from his upcoming double disc album coming in March. The album will contain one disc of all new material, as well as an additional disc containing 11 K-OS remixes from a slew of producers who competed to make the cut for $1000 a piece.
Still probably the best MC out of Canada aside from Kardinal Offishal, K-OS keeps delivering b-boy influenced hip-hop with unmatched consistency.
K-OS - 4,3,2,1
Bonus factoid: His manager is NBA player John Salley.

The Underground Railroad x Jay Smooth
Click on the above image to tune into the live feed from Underground Railroad Radio, one of the best hip-hop radio shows of all time (aside from Stretch & Bobbito).
The Railroad is still going strong after 17 years, playing the best of hip-hop, jazz, and soul mixes on Saturday and Sunday nights from midnight to 2am. If you are a New Yorker and aren't close to the computer, you can tune in to 99.5 FM at these times. (Note that the show's stream is unavailable except at these times, which is why we opted out of sharing the video stream here).
The show was initially founded, and is still hosted, by the greatest video blogger of all time, Jay Smooth. Don't forget to pay an additional visit to the kid at illdoctrine.com.

The Full Clip Is Reloading
Sorry for the lack of updates but I:
1) Am completely bored with hip-hop right now.
2) Am even more bored reading other peoples boring blogs about the same boring hip-hop.
3) Am a little concerned about being on the computer 15 hours a day some days.
4) Am getting healthy again.
Dont go anywhere, Im not quitting. Just letting you know what's up. Peace to all of you supporting the site regardless.
