Jaylib Returns

If there is ever a tribute to Dilla worth all the marbles, it's one done by his partner in crime and great friend Madlib.

Occasionally Madlib does some offbeat jazzy stuff that I can't quite wrap my head or ears around, but this is that Madvillain / Jaylib boom bap that is just heavy. The album is mostly instrumentals with a lot of Dilla adlibs thrown in.

Head over to Stones Throw to listen to what Madlib has put together and buy it. I did. For the price of a NYC hamburger you could have a Dilla tribute album forever. The cover art is atrocious (though big up to the magnificent Jeff Jank who does all of their work), but aside from that this album is a diamond in the rough.

...And yo Mad, after listening to this, ditch MF Doom, especially after all of his shenanigans. These beats would sound amazing with some Jay Electronica. That album would be an instant classic (and I say that carefully) with beats like Two For Pay Jay and Anthenagin. Two cents and Im out.

Here's a little taste of what Madlib might be planning on for the next Madvillainy...a few tracks off the new Madlib remix of Madvillain. Cop it from Stones Throw, if not for the fact that they are the only record label smart enough to offer their material as digital download themselves before the internet snakes snake it.

Madlib dropped a 61-track homage to Motown via Stones Throw podcast (Stones Throw is on their grind, in more ways than one). My plan is to listen to all of this thoroughly, head out on the town in my zoot suit, and last but not least bag me a cougar with some dance moves.

Throw Stones

This week has been the madness at the Stones Throw camp. The real news came today when Stones Throw announced that they would be rereleasing Madvillainy as a box set (people still do that?) ...

And this ain't no regular box set. It's $130. And it contains a hefty collection of rare items you will be telling your kids about when you are 60. "When I was a boy, music didn't sound like Lil Wayne the crap you listen to these days..." And so on.

J-Rocc

J-Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies is the man since the moon eclipsed the sun. He formed the Junkies with Rhettmatic way back in the early 90s (cats who have been live since then are the only people we actually like anyway), and now is doing most of his work with Stones Throw and Madlib.

There is a subtelty to the music that J-Rocc chooses and composes that takes a close ear, much like one you must have to listen to good jazz. The cuts on the beats are premeditated, the horn loops juggled just at the right moment. Check out what I mean from the Blue Note Collection recently put together by Rocc. Totally on point.
