La Maison de Mon Reve

After a long wait for nearly a decade, Portishead's most recent album Third was a huge disappointment (few will agree, Im sure). It had little continuity, lacked the passion of all previous albums, and most importantly, had few if any thumping hip-hop-influenced beats that made Portishead iconic in the first place.

That said, all has been forgiven and forgotten since my recent introduction to CocoRosie, a French duo formed by sisters Bianca "Coco" Leilani and Sierra Rose "Rosie" Casady. The below track represents everything I miss about Portishead in 2009, though it truly sounds a bit more like Portishead on whippits.

That was... straight, I guess. But wasn't fucking with anything off Dummy or Portishead, period. The instrumental seemed more reminiscent of Massive Attack than Portishead and the main vocalist was more reminiscent of some the singers Telepopmusik uses than Portishead. Also, damn, you were really hard on Third, no? It' was def a different vibe than the first two, but it still rode. Portishead always had a more subtle hip hop vibe than the other trip hop groups anyway, it really didn't sound like a HUGE departure to me.

Thanks for the track Dukes. It helped me rediscover some old CocoRosie albums I had.

Don..I admt while writing this that I knew I was making a stretch to Portishead. I dont claim that this has anything on Dummy or any earlier Portishead albums, but it is reminiscent of the sound that I wish Portishead would cultivate now.

A lot of people were DEFINITELY feeling Third, and honestly I got it, listened, and never really gave it a second thought.

Footey, glad you are back into Cocorosie. Now get your ass to the city this weekend and let's get loose bwoyyyyyyy.

Yeah man, I actually really enjoyed Third, it was definitely different though...I get what you're saying. I do think it's a stretch to draw that parallel between Cocorosie and Portishead, but I don't really give a fuck if it's a stretch because I LOVE Cocorosie. "Madonna" has been my jam for a while now.

haha that's ill that you posted some cocorosie on this site. i remember when you threw up that santogold icarus joint, it sounded like a mix of cocorosie and arthur russell (another dude to get up on if you're not already).
