Straight out of Houston, Texas, but without that down South sound, comes The ARE. That guy you didn't know was doing all the beats you love, previously under the tutelage of DJ Premier. I would be surprised if you have heard much that sounds like this.
While most of his albums are instrumental releases, (including a remix project of Tribe's Midnight Marauders), The ARE currently has a beat on the new EMC project with Masta Ace & Words.
