Mayer Hawthorne

This premiered on Giles Peterson's Best of 2008 a few weeks ago (BBC Radio 1), and has created quite the buzz since. Mark Ronson has been plugging the hell out of it too, though claims he has no idea who or what it is. Wale's success depended a great deal on Ronson so it's only imaginable what kind of success this kid has coming...

Little is know of Mayer, other than that he recently signed a deal with Stones Throw in some back alley & everyone thinks his new single is as bangin as Kardashian in a tub of oil. I told y'all doo wop and soul were back! Someone needs to sign me. Im a free agent.

not to knock the Duke's (cause you are a freakin Maven of this stuff) but the great and Peter Keating was thought as one of the greatest for using the "Renaissance" in his work.

doo-wop and soul are back, does that mean anything?

Thanks for the compliment. Though Im not quite sure what you're referring to with Peter Keating. Can you expand?

As far as the doo dop and soul thing is concerned, it's pretty tongue and cheek...

I just mean that lately I've been releasing a lot of soul, including Menahan Street Band, Hawthorne, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and Raphael Saadiq. Most hip-hop sites aren't up on this but once Stones Throw and a hip-hop labels start picking up on the fact that all of these throwback acts are getting live I think it's going to blow up. Seeing Cool Calm Pete doing tracks with Sharon Jones is a welcoming revelation, and I think we are going to see more of it (Hova on the Raphael Saadiq album...serious 60s sound). A more modern movement in doo wop music levitating around the Brooklyn area is exploding silently.

i dont get it.

is this mayer hawthorne kid

producing the track?

singing on it?

or what...

he found it? sampled it, time stretched it to make it dj friendly?

I dont know much about the kid, but he is part of a hip-hop group originally and goes by the name "Haircut." He is releasing new material under Hawthorne and is in fact doing the singing (possibly production) but Im not sure.

His people just got at me so Im sure Ill gather a little more.

He is definitely not just a Dj who dug this one up.

yeah i gets all the new wave of soul/doo wop and Saadiq is the illest but call me crazy for suggesting that by doing a whole retro thing you are dating yourself twice over and it becomes a novelty thing. DapKings and S. Jones is tite too but at the end of the day what is staying power does it have? you even got Jamie Lidell- everyone doing the throwback.

and Petey Keating is a Ayn Rand reference.

Mayer is also known as "Haircut." He's originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has ties to the Athletic Mic League, Lab Techs, and his group called Now On. Now On just released a dope LP called "Tomorrow Already" which is heavy on the electro-soul funk hip hop tip. He DJs, produces, and sings.

Whoever the asshole is who keeps taking down my files from DivShare should maybe talk to me about it first and we could work something out, since I am promoting the hell out of Stones Throw every five seconds.

Thank you,

Management
