I was watching the fantastic Rolling Stones documentary Gimme Shelter last night, and the real shining moment musically of the whole film is the Tina Turner version of this song, though the Stones are pretty bad themselves in '69. Tina just got boosted on the Respect List. Here is the original Otis version which is of course the classic.
We really need a revival of singers like this. All our generation has had is D'Angelo and Lauryn. In the meantime all of America is glued to American Idol and thinks that that is singing. Yet another modern phenomena I find baffling.
